Oh man. The Cheesecake Factory and I go waaaaaaay back! 2010 to be exact, when I visited their San Francisco location for the first time. Big portions, super legit comfort food (I am all about this), and an amazing strawberry cheesecake… I was HOOKED!!! My go to is for sure their Chicken Alfredo, with it’s really creamy, parmesan goodness. Ah, I love comfort food so much!

So when I got a chance to try the first Canadian location in advance of the opening, I started counting down the days!! No lie. Finally… the day arrived! My first impressions are that the Yorkdale location is huge and extremely busy. They’re expecting it to be busy for a few months though, so get ready for long wait times Toronto.

Ok now on to the food. I should say though that they offered a limited menu for the media preview (with their full menu being around 200+ items). First up, apps. My boyfriend shared their Buffalo Blasts, which came as a HUGE portion of a lot chicken pieces. Man, I really forgot what their sizing was like. The only way I can describe it is cut up chicken pieces with buffalo sauce and cheese that had been coated in a spicy wrapper and deep fried. I’ve never tried anything like this app before and I really have to say that it was an awesome surprise. A super interesting take on chicken fingers. This is definitely best paired with a pint. By the time we finished this, I was feeling pretty stuffed (and we were only on the apps!!).

For the entrees we tried the Chinese Chicken Salad, and the Bacon Bacon burger. Again these were huge (I LOVE this about Cheesecake Factory). Let’s start with the Chinese Chicken Salad, which is a staple for me whenever I visit a location. Presentation wise it was awesome, but taste wise it felt lacking and a bit bland, kind of like they went light on the dressing. The ingredients still tasted fresh though!

The Bacon Bacon burger is not a typo!! This burger is pure American goodness with two different types of bacon: crispy bacon and thick cut slow roasted smoked bacon. Loved how juicy the patty was, and the slight sweetness of the smoked bacon. This also came with fries. At this point, I was struggling to breathe and mentally unbuttoning my pants… and I was in heaven!!!!

And now we get to my favourite part, the cheesecake!! I typically get the original with whole strawberries and whipped cream, which is a classic and something I would recommend anybody. This time we shared the Oreo Dream Extreme cheesecake, and man the name reflects how decadent and delicious this was! Everybody, this is the best Oreo cheesecake that I have ever tried!!! They’ve baked whole Oreos into their original cheesecake, sandwiched between layers of fudge cake and an Oreo cookie mouse, topped with a milk chocolate icing and a huge piece of Oreo. I died and went to heaven!!!

To wrap up this super long post, I strongly urge you to give one of my favourite classic spots a try (hopefully when the lines die down). You will for sure love the food and not to mention the service is pretty great!

Walk into Antler at 10pm on a Friday, and you’ll be able to try a late night menu featuring dishes like Venison Heart Poppers, Wild Boar Corndog and Duck Heart Yakitori. I got a sneak preview of this exciting menu at a media event and I have to admit I have never pushed myself to be this adventurous!!

Real talk though, it was both a fun and delicious experience! One of the highlights were the Duck Liver Paté served with crostini and wild blueberry compote. WOW, I was pleasantly surprised by the light and slightly salty taste of the paté, complemented by a touch of sweetness!

I also really enjoyed the Wild Boar Corndog – the house made sausage was ridiculously tasty and perfectly deep fried… YUM!

The late night menu is also Japanese inspired – you’ll see gyoza, takoyaki and yakitori on the menu. Not to mention a REALLY kick ass cocktail called Tsubomi Squeeze, featuring lemongrass infused sake, grapefruit liqueur, Aperol and lemon rhubarb bitters. I can drink it in gallons really, the flavours so delicate but not too sweet… It really made me nostalgic of my super dope Japan trip earlier this year.

Antler prides itself on serving locally sourced food, and you’ll see wild boar, deer and bison all over the menu. One thing that stands out to me… Bison Rib Eye!! What?! I’ll definitely be back to try that!!

I really love when restaurants in Toronto have concepts that are outside of the box and unique. Which is why Descendant Detroit Style Pizza was pretty great – loved the thick dough and crunchy crust that is so different from other pizza restaurants. My best friend and I split a regular Pepperoni (had to, it’s a classic) for lunch and it was the perfect size for a nice lunch snack. The flavour was lacking a bit though, we should have gotten double pepperoni…regrets!!! The crust to topping ratio was definitely off for my standards (I love meat), and the tart sauce did little to add to the overall pizza’s flavour.

That said, I’ll for sure swing by this cute little spot the next time I find myself in Leslieville, and will try another type of pizza!

Shiratama Sundae ($8.00)
Matcha soft serve, Japanese rice dumplings,
Red bean, roasted soybean powder

OK LAWD. The matcha soft serve ice cream here is no joke. Meaning, I really really need one whole tub of the ice cream ASAP!!! I love all things matcha and this far exceeded my expectations (yep, it’s better than Uncle Tetsu). TBH, the size of the cup itself was pretty small, and I’m guessing it’s pricey because they import some ingredients from Japan. I got the Shiratama Sundae which was pretty dope but thought that the ice cream to red bean ratio was a bit off – the red bean’s sweetness overpowered the matcha. The rice dumplings didn’t add any value. Overall the standout here is the soft serve.

I read that some people lined up for an hour and a half to two hours for this… It’s not worth the wait. Go when there are no lines and pick up a matcha cream puff (which I didn’t get because I just got my wisdom teeth pulled, boo).

Review: Tea of the People

chai, reviews, tea

IMG_9096There’s no denying I’m the girl that likes to eat massive amounts of carbs until there’s no tomorrow. So I definitely do not fall under the category of the people that eat clean.

But… Clean drinking?

To be honest, I’ve never had organic tea before, just content with regular tea from Tazo, Teavana and even David’s Tea (and I drink tons of it). Which is why Tea of the People is a company that I can stand behind. I’ve tried their Barrel Aged Chai and it’s delicious. Every ingredient is organic—none of that artificially flavored crap. They promote sustainability through their environmentally friendly made, “best-in-class”, most antioxidant rich teas. In other words, you get the most health benefits from their tea because high quality, natural ingredients are used.  IMG_9013

Take the Barrel Aged Chai for example. Their tea process consists of hand blending the tea and ingredients, placing it into white oak wood barrels, and then then storing it in a cellar for five months. All to fuse the ingredients together nicely.

…Definitely not like your usual Lipton tea.

The first thing I notice about the aroma is how intense and boldly earthy it is. It’s especially spicy, and deliciously so. This particular chai is a blend of: black tea, cinnamon, ginger root, black pepper, cloves, cardamom, peppercorn, chili pepper – all of which are organic. Opening the pouch, I’m hit with the sweet cinnamon, followed by the mellow scent of cardamom and ginger.

IMG_9182

Once I give the leaves some steeping, the liquid without the leaves has a sweet aroma accentuated by strong notes of the spicy peppercorns and chili pepper. At first sip, the spices are a bit diminished, but there is still a very strong kick of pepper. After adding cream and sugar for a traditional chai, the first thing I notice is a nice kick of spices, which then fades into a blend of ginger and cinnamon. Every sip reminds me of the holidays and leaves me feeling very warm and comforted—this is really good chai.

I am all about chai teas that combine unique ingredients, and this is one of them.

Check out their website here. It’s got everything you need to know including the rest of the tea they offer.

Disclaimer: Tea of the People sent me this tea to review if I enjoyed the product, which I did! Do yourself a favour and check out their tea ASAP.
