Big Beef Bowl
1 Byng Ave, North York

I was really excited to try this new spot that just opened at Yonge and Finch, mostly because I’ve been craving for a nice big bowl of beef brisket soup… And also – look at those noodles! Really flat, thick and hand pulled. I’ve never seen anything like it!!

First things first: Big Beef Bowl is a small restaurant that probably fits 10-15 customers, so I imagine they get really busy at lunch and dinner. The food is awesome though, and pretty legit. Aside from the large bowl of noodles I ordered, my boyfriend and I also got pork, chive and egg dumplings as well as the spicy roasted corn. Both SO delish! I should have taken pictures but I was really focused on my bowl of noodles which was amazing: spicy, rich broth reminiscent of pho. By reminiscent I mean that there are spices in pho that I taste in the broth, but both are totally different dishes. Loved the noodles too, they had an amazingly chewy texture. The chunks of beef brisket were really tender, I wanted more!! The service was great too, no complaints!

Will definitely be back to try another noodle size and probably extra beef.

So summer has pretty much hit Toronto and I’ve been on this last minute diet trying to get that beach bod. So far, not much success yet!! If I could, I would eat all the carbs and ice cream the whole year round. But unfortunately that kind of eat-all-you -can only happens in winter.

I love this smoothie bowl though. It’s the perfect post-workout snack or breakfast! Aside from being a really healthy bowl of nutrients and antioxidants, it also is super easy to make! You pretty much toss frozen fruit with any kind of liquid (almond milk/coconut water etc) or yogurt, then top off with whatever you like! I made my smoothie base with frozen banana, blackberries and yogurt. For my toppings I used banana, blackberries, sliced mango, coconut and chia seeds. YUM!

So this was my first shot at making madeleines and WOW!!! I ate 4 pieces in the span of a minute – YEP, it was that good! Light, buttery with a hint of lemon, and crunchy at the sides: this is the PERFECT two-bite afternoon snack. I would say these madeleines are a hybrid of a yellow cake crossed between a crispy cookie.

Here are a few secrets to making really bomb madeleines:

  1. Make sure the batter is VERY cold (refrigerate the batter at least a day in advance)
  2. Butter and flour the Madeleine tin before hand and keep it in the freezer
  3. Watch your madeleines after the 5 minute mark to make sure they don’t over bake
  4. Bake using a Madeleine tin rather than a silicone mold

Otherwise the recipe is SO easy, you can’t mess this up!
