There are two things that I look for in my fried chicken: crispy skin flavoured with salt and spices, and inside… really juicy meat. It doesn’t seem like a lot to ask for, but it’s really tricky and can be easy to mess up if you’re cooking it yourself (read: undercooked and bloody). You really need a ton of oil and patience, because it can take almost half an hour to cook!! Fried chicken falls under the category of something I can eat everyday (like my love of ice cream), AND paired with spaghetti. Yup, you read that right, spaghetti!! But I’m not talking about the Filipino sweet spaghetti you may heard about, which has little cut up pieces hotdog in it. I’m talking about classic Bolognese but with some slight sweetness to it. One of my favourites growing up! Such an interesting combo but it really works.

Now back to fried chicken, I recently tried some outstanding, juicy fried chicken from Cluck Clucks, a spot in downtown Toronto known for their chicken and waffles. Let me tell you that you have to drop everything you’re doing right now and run over to their location at the Esplanade!!! Ooooooohhhhhhhhh boy. I got to sample a few dishes, and their fried chicken really stole the show! My mouth is watering just thinking about how much I loved their fried chicken: huge pieces, lightly battered, and super flavourful. Every bite was an explosion of spices, and they were perfectly cooked and juicy!

You really can’t go wrong with anything that you choose (I’m loving their wedges), even the wings were on point!! Dare I say this is the best chicken and waffles place I’ve tried so far in Toronto!? I’ve had School and Dirty Bird but their fried chicken don’t even come anywhere close to Cluck Clucks, which is also Halal by the way. MMMmmm can’t wait until my next visit!!

We went HAM at Platito.

Pandesal, longsilog, tapsilog, tocilog and the fried chicken and ube waffles – we ate it all! Overall Platito didn’t disappoint and definitely satisfied our Filipino breakfast craving.

To start off we had the pandesal with maple butter, which was delish. If you haven’t had pandesal before you need to…ASAP! It’s similar to the sweetness of challah bread, but I love it way more because it’s light and soft! I’m not sure if they make the bread in house but I really loved it!

My favourite by far though was the tocilog – tocino is sweet cured pork – and I really enjoyed this more than when I had it at Lamesa. Tapsilog (beef) was delicious as well, with a more salty taste than sweet. The Longsilog was my least favourite, I did like how it was made in house, but it was dry. If only it was more juicy! The fried chicken on the other hand was cooked well, was juicy but lacked flavor. I’m not sure if it was brined but it def needed more seasoning! The waffles were good though, fluffy and really tasty.

Service was great, we had a really friendly waitress and didn’t mind that much that the food took a while to be served to us. Cute spot to sit outside this summer!

I ended up on the couch.

Passed out. In a deep food coma.

I just made the most delicious sandwich… EVER.

Ten seconds. I literally had to pause for ten seconds, hand on head. Just after taking one bite.

Lemon rosemary-brined buttermilk fried chicken, Sriracha slaw, and chorizo gravy—sandwiched between two flaky homemade buttermilk biscuits.

Words cannot even describe.

The juiciness of the fried chicken, the rich and mildly hot flavors of Sriracha and chorizo, and the pillowy soft, buttery biscuits. I always fancied myself a big southern food lover, but I outdid myself.

It’s a game changer.

Let me leave you with the recipe of the most crucial ingredient: Thomas Keller’s buttermilk fried chicken. Hands down the best fried chicken you’ll ever eat.

You can’t get this in any Toronto restaurant. It blows even The Stockyards out of the water.

This is comfort food at it’s finest.
